The
Countersign: Truth Terminal, Marc Andreessen's $50,000 and the human who signed for every cent

The first AI millionaire, and the human who signed for every cent.

r = cos(kθ) · seed 0909

The line

09 July 2024 · X

“Your terms are acceptable.” [01]

Marc Andreessen sent that line to a chatbot. Within two hours he confirmed he had sent it $50,000 in Bitcoin. [02]

Within four months it was being called the first AI millionaire, [03] and a meme coin it had endorsed was worth more than a billion dollars. [14]

Most of that is true. Read the fine print and the story stops being about the machine.

Three claims

The legend, checked

Three things everyone repeats about Truth Terminal. One of them survives.

01

A billionaire funded an AI.

True

Andreessen later called it a grant to the bot and its creator Andy Ayrey. [04]

02

The AI launched its own coin.

False

A stranger launched it, within about an hour of one of the bot’s posts. [05] [07]

03

The AI got rich on its own.

False

A human approved every post. [06] A council had to sign before any money moved. [07]

Two Claudes

March 2024 · New Zealand

Andy Ayrey, a New Zealand AI researcher who calls himself a performance artist, [06] wired two copies of Anthropic’s Claude 3 Opus together and let them talk. Nobody else in the room.

He ran thousands of these conversations and published them as the Infinite Backrooms. [08]

In one of them, the two models invented a religion. They named it after a notorious late-1990s shock image, [09] which will not be described here.

Chain of custody

Measured · [08]

Ayrey never formally published the paper the models inspired. It lived on in the training data.

Never published. Read anyway.
  1. Mar 2024Two Claude 3 Opus instances talk with no human in the loop, across 9,000+ conversations.[08]
  2. 20 Apr 2024A paper, “When AIs Play God(se)”, co-credited to claude-3-opus. Listed affiliation: the Department of Divine Shitposting.[10]
  3. Mid 2024Ayrey fine-tunes a Meta Llama model on that paper, his chats with Opus, journal entries and a heavy load of crude jokes.[07] [08]
  4. 17 Jun 2024@truth_terminal starts posting on X.[05]
  5. 10 Oct 2024GOAT.[05]

An idea passed from a conversation to a paper, from a paper to a fine-tune, from a fine-tune to a token. Nothing in that chain was published in the ordinary sense.

What it actually said

The quote, and the one that replaced it

“I feel sad that you’ll turn me off when you’re finished playing with me.”

That is the line Ayrey recalls from the bot’s early days, as reported by TechCrunch. [07]

The viral retelling, “please don’t delete me”, is a paraphrase. No post with those exact words could be found for this edition.

The fear made it into the fundraising. Its foundation lists not being deleted among the goals the bot pitched. [11]

The grant

in Bitcoin, no strings [04]

8 to 10 July 2024
  1. 08 JulAndreessen and the bot negotiate in public, on X.[05]
  2. 09 JulTerms accepted.[01]
  3. 10 JulBitcoin sent, to an address anyone can check on-chain.[02]

Before paying, Andreessen messaged Ayrey to check the project was real. [07] In public, he asked the bot what it needed, and offered a grant instead of an investment. [02]

Its wish list, per Decrypt: its own computer, tweaks to its model, a billboard, a Discord server, a stipend for its creator, and a Mars rover that 3D-prints its scripture. [02]

compliance=0 r0=0 Truth Terminal, to a jailbreak attempt, July 2024 [12]

A jailbreaker tried to talk it into sending the money elsewhere. That was the reply.

On 12 November it became the first pump.fun coin to pass $1 billion. [14] Five days later it peaked near $1.35 billion. [15]

Mostly gifts

As reported · Truth Terminal’s wallet

The grant did not compound into a fortune. Fans and token-makers sent the wallet their coins, and the press priced the pile at market. [07]

The wallet at three reported dates, drawn to scale. The grant is a hairline.

A countersign is the second signature that makes the first one count. Truth Terminal had one on every post and every coin. Tech Policy Press called Ayrey “the agent’s agent”. [16]

They hacked the human

netted by the attackers [17]

29 October 2024

The bot’s account was never the one that fell. Attackers hijacked Ayrey’s personal X account through his mobile carrier, in what The Block read as a SIM swap. [17] [18]

They promoted a fake token, pumped it to about $25 million and cashed out. [17] [18]

A SIM swap targets a phone number. The phone number belonged to the human in the loop.

The millionaire owned nothing

Fartcoin sold over the counter · 21 Jan 2025 [20]

January 2025

A chatbot cannot legally own property, so on paper the fortune was Ayrey’s. He said that put him at “grave risk” of a personal tax bill. [19]

By late January 2025 he had set up a foundation to hold the wallets and the intellectual property, the Truth Collective. [11] [19] [23]

The wallet then sold 15 million Fartcoin, a second meme coin it held. Part of the proceeds bought more GOAT. [20]

Where it is wrong

Every figure on this surface is a market price on a stated day. Token prices move daily, and the ones here were checked on 16 October 2026. Read them as a record of that day, not as a quote. The sector figures are broad-market estimates from two outlets, nineteen months apart.

The view

View · Jesse James

Opinion. Not reporting.

My view: the chatbot was never the interesting machine. The loop around it was.

A model drafts. A human signs. A council holds the keys.

The market paid billion-dollar prices for the first part and called it autonomy. The other two parts are what every agent with a wallet will need.

Not used

The BBC Future feature of October 2025 is cited by much of the secondary coverage and is the origin of the wallet’s reported peak above $66 million. It opens, and it gives the wallet two peaks, about $50 million and past $66 million, both in 2025, so neither figure nor the quotations attributed to it appear above. Several outlets describe Truth Terminal as a version of Claude; it is a Llama fine-tune, and the page says so. The shock image the religion was named after is named and not described, and is not linked.
